Mangrove Restoration Initiative
Restoring vital mangrove ecosystems for coastal protection and biodiversity.
About the Program
Our Mangrove Restoration Initiative focuses on rehabilitating degraded mangrove forests across Pemba Island. Mangroves are crucial ecosystems that provide natural coastal defense against erosion and storms, serve as nurseries for fish and other marine life, and act as significant carbon sinks. Through community engagement and scientific methods, we plant new mangrove saplings, protect existing forests, and educate local populations on the importance of these vital habitats.
This program not only contributes to ecological restoration but also enhances the resilience of coastal communities by safeguarding their livelihoods and homes. We work closely with local fishermen and women, integrating traditional knowledge with modern conservation techniques to ensure sustainable outcomes.
